QuickBooks Shortcut Keys

A good way to measure your efficiency with QuickBooks is by the number of keystrokes you use to enter data. Using the shortcut keys is a fast and easy way to enter information, especially for dates. For example, if today’s date was 12/15/02, instead of entering each number separately, you can click in the date field and type the letter “T”. QuickBooks will enter today’s date for you.

  • “T” stands for “Today”.

  • “Y” will take you to the first day of the year. “Y” is the first letter in the word “Year”.

  • “R” will take you to the last day of the year. “R” is the last letter in the word “Year”.

  • “M” will take you to the first day of the month. “M” is the first letter in the word “Month”.

  • “H” will take you to the last day of the month. “H” is the last letter in the word “Month”.

Another good use of the shortcut keys is to enter the “+” key to move the date forward, and the “-” key to move the day back. Each time you press the “+” or “-” key it moves one day, or if you hold the key down it moves the days very fast for as long as you hold it down.
If you do enter the date by putting in each number, and the date is in the current year, it is not necessary to key the digits for the year. For example, it is not required to key in
12/15/02. The numbers 1215 will suffice.

The use of shortcut keys is derived from the old DOS days when that was the only way to function in QuickBooks without using the menu bar. There were no icons. I liken it to riding a Harley Davison. Once you’ve used it, you don’t want to give it up. Below is the complete list of QuickBooks shortcut keys.
